In 1989 Randy Muhammad underwent a profound transformation renouncing his past as a founding member of one of Boston’s local gangs his remarkable journey towards redemption and spiritual growth commenced when he embraced the teachings of the Nation of Islam a turning point that illuminated the path of his future endeavors.
This transformation gained local recognition when he was featured in a Boston Herald news article in 1990 the article highlighted his extraordinary transition from a gang member to a devoted Muslim, underscoring his unwavering dedication to positive change.
Randy Muhammad’s ascent within the Nation of Islam was marked by dedication and hard work he is scented through the ranks starting as a squad leader and progressing to the position of Lieutenant and Drill Instructor for the fruit of Islam (FOI) where he played a pivotal role in imparting discipline and values to the community.
His commitment to the ministry led him to the esteemed position of Assistant Minister at the nation of Islam Muhammad Mosque No. 11 in Grove Hall a role he served for 15 years. In December of 2018 he received the honor of being selected as the senior minister of Muhammad Mosque No.11 a testament to his steadfast leadership and dedication.
As the Senior Minister Randy Muhammad overseas a dedicated staff of 26 personnel responsible for managing 11 different Ministries remarkably he is the first Afro Latino Minister to hold this esteemed position embodying a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Minister Randy Muhammad’s dedication to serving the community extends beyond the walls of the Mosque for the past 25 years he has been a constant presence in the county jails and state prisons providing spiritual and moral guidance to inmates over the last 14 years he has served as the first and only Nation of Islam chaplain working within the Massachusetts Department of Corrections bringing hope and transformation to incarcerated individuals.
Additionally Minister Randy Muhammad has actively participated as the Co-chair of the local organizing committee collaborating with various community organizations to strategize and address issues affecting the Black and Brown communities his work within the Ministry of Justice of the local Organizing Committee has resulted in educational symposiums and seminars aimed at highlighting unjust laws and their disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.
In the wake of a tragic event Minister Randy Muhammad initiated a mission to promote peace and safety within his community after the murder of a 74-year-old Mattapan grandmother in April 2019 he organized a group of men committed to patrolling the community and fostering a culture of peace he established the Boston chapter of the 10,000 Fearless Peacemakers a group of trained and certified individuals dedicated to conflict mediation nonviolent crisis intervention and emergency response.
Minister Randy Muhammad’s visionary approach extend to addressing the critical issues of substance use disorders mental health and homelessness within his community recognizing the need for comprehensive recovery support services he founded torchlight recovery Inc a nonprofit organization to harness the collective talents and experiences of believers within Muhammad Mosque No. 11 this dedicated team consisting of professionals and individuals with lived recovery experience collaborates with various stakeholders including the city of Boston public health Commission the office of faith-based initiatives community organizations business leaders and law enforcement together they provide outreach support services to those in Nubian square who are grappling with substance use disorders mental health challenges and homelessness.
